Chapter 17: First Kick
Every head at the table turned to Gianni.
He stood behind my chair with his hands at his sides and his face as calm as a closed door.
Cordelia smiled at him.
"Go on," she said. "Tell them where you're from, Gianni. Tell them who you ran for when you were a boy."
"South Philadelphia," I said, before he could open his mouth.
Cordelia blinked.
"He was fourteen when the Philadelphia family sent him to Red Hook," I said. "My father knew, and he hired him anyway."
Cordelia opened her mouth.
The captains stared at me.
"I've known since I was twenty-three," I said. "My father told me the year before he died, so I'd never hear it first from someone like you."
I watched Cordelia's face lose its shape.
"Convenient," she said.
"It's true."
The consigliere cleared his throat.
He put his glasses back on.
"It is true," he said. "I was at the table the night her father brought him in."
Renzo turned.
"You never told me that."
"You were twenty-two and in Miami." The consigliere looked at Cordelia over the rims. "Her father stood in the old Don's study with a boy in a borrowed suit and said, this one's mine now."
