Chapter 18: Tell Me What to Say
I took the paper out of Gianni's fingers.
I knew that font.
I'd read it on every route sheet and every payroll memo for four years.
It came off the printer in Renzo's study.
"He wouldn't," my mother said from the stairs.
"No," I said. "He wouldn't. But somebody wants us to think he would."
Gianni was already on the phone to the foreman.
By the time the police car came and went, it was one in the morning, and none of us had touched the cannoli.
My mother swept glass until I took the broom away from her.
Then she sat on an overturned crate in her own bakery and stared at the hole where her window used to be.
"Your father put that glass in," she said. "Nineteen eighty-nine. He carried it in himself with your uncle."
I sat down on the floor next to her crate and put my head on her knee.
She put her hand in my hair.
We stayed like that until Gianni came back from the street.
He had a roll of plastic sheeting and a staple gun he'd found God knows where.
"Merry Christmas," he said.
