Chapter 19: The Fake Date
"Sit down," I said.
He looked at the chair like he wasn't sure it was an invitation.
"Sit, Renzo. You're dripping on my mother's floor."
He sat.
Gianni stayed where he was, with his hand beside the brick.
I turned the legal pad around so Renzo could read it.
He read it twice.
"January twelfth," he said.
"A container of something you can't afford to lose. Coming in on my pier, because Elizabeth is burned and you've got nowhere else." I tapped the page. "You tell her once. Casually. Like you're tired and you trust her."
"I am tired."
"Then it won't be hard."
He almost smiled.
"And then?"
"And then nobody else hears it. Not your captains. Not your driver. Not your mother." I held his eyes. "If anybody comes to my pier that night, there's only one place they heard it."
He sat back.
He looked at the brick for a long time.
"What's really in the container?"
"Tile."
"Tile."
"Forty tons. For a hotel in Hoboken." I shrugged. "They can have all they can carry."
Gianni made a sound in his throat that might have been a laugh.
