Chapter 32: Never Weak
Nobody spoke.
A waiter stood frozen by the kitchen doors with a tray of glasses.
Renzo looked at the stage.
He looked at the head table under his family's crest, with its chairs pushed in and no plates.
Then he looked at mine.
At his mother, sitting across from me with her back to him.
At Nina, asleep now on Gianni's shoulder with his tie in her fist.
He walked in.
He didn't go toward the stage.
He crossed the room along the wall, past the captains' tables, past the wives, until he reached the second table by the kitchen doors.
There were two empty chairs there now.
He pulled one out and sat down in it.
The girls still at that table stared at him with their mouths open.
One of them, very slowly, passed him the bread.
"Thank you," Renzo said.
A nervous ripple passed through the room.
The band leader looked up at me on the stage, waiting.
I nodded.
The music started again.
Little by little, the room went back to its dinner, and the waiters started moving.
But every few seconds, somebody's eyes went to the kitchen doors.
