Chapter 18: The Recordings
On Friday at nine o'clock sharp, the second phone rang in my hand.
I had not sent a text. For the first time in three years, I had let the hour go by.
I looked at the screen. It said Pharmacy.
The phone recorded every call on its own, and I had checked that morning that the little red dot was lit.
I answered.
"Good morning, dear," said Richard Draycott. "You missed your appointment."
"I'm not sending them anymore."
"I know. I've been reading about you." He sounded amused. "Six nights a week at that little club. And my son bought the row."
"What do you want?"
"Only to talk sense. You've made a mistake, Tara, and I'd like to help you out of it."
"Go on."
"The board meets on the tenth of November. I'd like you to be there. A short statement, signed, saying Vaughn has been unwell at work. That you've seen him weep at his desk."
"He never wept at his desk."
"You'll find a way to say it kindly." His voice stayed soft. "In return, the foundation reinstates your mother's grant. Quietly, by Monday."
"His money already pays for her room."
"For two years, yes. And the grant on top would make her very comfortable." He paused. "Or I could tell you what happens if you refuse."
I gripped the phone.
"Tell me."
"A photograph of a girl in a mask reaches every newspaper in this city, with a name under it. And I mention to the board that my son's chief of staff is a stripper he's been sleeping with since October."
