Chapter 22: The Board, Part Two
Richard lunged for the laptop.
He was sixty-three and he carried a cane, and he moved faster than I had ever seen him move.
Vaughn caught his wrist two inches from the keyboard.
"Sit down, Father."
"That is a private recording, and it was obtained illegally."
"It was recorded on a phone you gave her, on an account you pay for," Vaughn said. "In a call you made."
Richard's lawyer, a tall man in a grey suit, leaned in and whispered. Richard shook him off.
The recording kept playing.
The room listened to him offer a woman her mother's care for a false statement.
They listened to him say the board has had my signature on its checks for thirty-five years.
When it ended, nobody breathed.
The white-haired director at the far end laid her pen on the table.
"Play the other one," she said.
"Which?"
"Whatever else you have, Vaughn."
He glanced at me, and I took out my real phone and set it on the glass.
"This was Saturday," I said. "At Harbor House."
I pressed play.
Richard's voice came out first, smooth and fond, telling my mother about county facilities.
Then my own voice said get out.
Then there was a long silence, and then my mother's voice told him to leave, in a sentence nobody in that room would forget.
Somebody at the table made a noise that began as a laugh and turned into a cough.
The heavy man who had seconded the motion put both hands flat on the glass.
"I withdraw my second," he said.
"You can't withdraw a second," one of the lawyers said.
"Watch me."
Richard turned his chair toward the table.
His face had gone grey.
"This is an ambush. Vaughn has been planning it for a week."
"He has been planning it since the thirtieth," said the white-haired woman, "when you stood in front of two hundred people and used a girl's private business as a weapon."
