Chapter 6: Chiyo

Chiyo dropped her lantern and screamed.

It was a good scream, the one she used on rats.

Ryugen caught the lantern with his tail before it hit the rocks.

"Don't scream," Shizuku said, hurrying round him. "It's me. I'm alive. Chiyo, stop, you'll bring the whole village."

"You're dead!" Chiyo flung herself at her and held on so hard that Shizuku's ribs creaked. "You're dead, I watched you go in, I've been coming here for four nights to pray for your soul and you're alive and you've got that on your neck!"

"On my shoulder."

"It's glowing!"

"It does that."

Chiyo let go and stepped back, wiping her nose on her sleeve.

She finally looked at the tall silver-haired man standing behind Shizuku with a lantern hanging from his tail.

He inclined his head to her, very courteously.

Chiyo bowed so low her braids touched the ground.

"Honored lord," she said, in a small, terrified voice. "Please don't eat my cousin."

"I haven't the slightest intention of it," said the dragon god.

"She's tough. She'd be stringy."

"Chiyo!"

"I'm just saying."

Ryugen's mouth twitched.

Shizuku saw it, and she saw her cousin see it, and Chiyo's eyes went round.

"You like him," Chiyo whispered.

"I do not."

"You do. Look at your face."

Shizuku put her hands on her face.

It was hot.

"I'd like to talk to her," she said to the dragon, "somewhere warm. Is that allowed?"

"Anything is allowed," he said.

He took a pearl the size of a bean from the inside of his sleeve and pressed it into Chiyo's hand.

"Hold this under your tongue," he said, "and do not swallow it."

An hour later Chiyo was sitting cross-legged on the floor of Shizuku's room in the lake palace.

She was in her wet nightclothes, eating her third rice cake and staring at Kohaku.

Kohaku was staring back.
