Chapter 22: The Crown Dragon
The Standing began at sunrise on the roost yard, with ten thousand people watching.
They filled the cliff terraces and the palace walls, and they hung off the river bridges in the pale morning.
Every one of them had come to see a girl walk into fire.
The Crown Dragon lay on the high stone at the head of the yard, as it had since the first queen.
It was Ysmera's own beast, old and red and enormous, and today it did not look old.
Its great gold eyes were open and bright, its tail lay in a tight coil, and smoke drifted from its nostrils in slow, even breaths.
Ysmera stood on the lower step in the iron crown and the Dragon Seal.
Torvald stood a pace behind her in full Dragonguard black.
Beside her, in her good gray gown, stood Fia.
She was twenty, tall, and brown-haired, and her small gray eyes were fixed on the beast.
