Chapter 26: The Eve of the Moon
I ran back up the track.
Struan ran behind me, swearing at his ribs.
The cottage door was open.
The steward stood in the kitchen with a typed sheet and a pen on the table.
Two black coats stood by the dresser, and the huntsman sat very still in his chair with his hands flat on his knees.
"Your Highness," the steward said. "The Regent asked me to take a statement for the Moon Court."
I picked up the paper.
It said that the King had been drinking heavily on the morning of his death, and that the undersigned had seen it.
I tore it in half, then in half again, and dropped it in the peat fire.
"This man is under my seal," I said. "Him and his daughter's family. It's in the Charter. Page nine."
The steward closed his notebook.
"The Regent will be sorry to hear the old man's confused," he said.
"Tell the Regent the old man's coming to stay with me."
We moved him to the stillhouse that afternoon, with his daughter, his son-in-law and his granddaughter in the back of a borrowed farm truck.
