Chapter 28: The Witnesses
Struan lifted the cup and drank.
The whole hill watched him swallow, three times.
Struan lowered the cup.
He'd drunk half of it.
He stood very straight for a moment, and then his knees went.
He caught himself on the ledge with his good hand, and the silver cup tipped in the other one, and I was there.
I took it out of his fingers.
I held it up so every chief on the half circle could see it.
Then I turned it over and poured the rest out on the Turning Stone.
The bitter green smell came up off the rock so strong the front ring stepped back.
"That's what he blesses," I said. "Every autumn. Smell it."
Struan was on his knees in the heather.
He was grey to the lips and shaking, and his eyes kept trying to close.
"Struan," I said. "Stay up. Stay with me."
"It's going under," he said, through his teeth. "I can feel it going under."
Morag came through the crowd.
