The rehearsal of the Cup was held on the ninetieth day, in the empty banquet hall of the palace.
The long tables were bare.
Chairs stood stacked along the walls.
The Emperor's master of ceremonies paced the floor with a scroll, calling out where each of the great houses would sit.
Lysandra stood at the high table in a plain dark dress.
In front of her lay a silver pitcher, two gold cups and a small embroidered cloth.
Anneliese sat across from her in the guest of honor's chair.
The Prince stood behind the Saintess's shoulder, and Alaric stood behind his wife's.
The three of them had not said a word to each other since the Court tea.
[Scripted scene: The Rehearsal. The Duchess pours the first cup. The Saintess tastes it and cries out that it is bitter.]
[Outcome: the Prince calls for the Duchess's arrest.]
She read it, and the ceremony went on around her.
"The hostess pours the first cup," the master of ceremonies said, droning. "The guest of honor drinks. The hostess pours the second, and drinks."
