Chapter 23: The Prince at Midnight
Alaric unlocked the door.
The Crown Prince of the Empire stood in the corridor in a rumpled coat, with snow in his hair and a lantern in his fist.
He looked like a man who had ridden hard to get somewhere he was afraid of.
"Emeric," said Alaric.
"I'm sorry for the hour." The Prince's voice was rough. "I've walked up and down the Temple gardens twice. I had to talk to somebody who wouldn't repeat it."
"Come in."
He came in.
He sat down heavily in the chair by the fire.
Lysandra, who had never seen the future king of the Empire look anything but cheerful, saw that his hands were shaking.
"Anneliese came to me this evening," he said. "She was crying. She says she has had a vision."
"A vision," Lysandra said.
"Of the Banquet. She says she saw the Duchess pour the first cup, and the cup was poisoned. And a vial in your sleeve." His eyes came up. "She wants you arrested tomorrow. Before the Banquet. For my sake and hers, she says. To prevent it."
