Chapter 32: Chapter Twenty-One
On a morning in high summer Lysandra woke late, with the sun already on the bed and nobody counting.
The ceiling was blue with light.
The crack in the plaster ran between two gold stars and she knew every inch of it.
She lay still for a minute, listening for the voice.
It didn't come.
It had not come since the Banquet, and she still woke each morning with her ear cocked for it.
Her husband was not in the bed.
His side was warm.
There was a note on his pillow in the hard black hand.
"Gone to see a man about a horse. Back by noon. Eat something. A."
She smiled at it for longer than a note deserved.
Greta brought the tray at eight, as promised.
She set it down on the table with a clatter, grinning, and poured the tea herself.
"You'll want to hurry, Your Grace. There's a gentleman at the front gate."
"Which gentleman?" Lysandra said.
"He says he's your father."
Lysandra put down the cup.
The count had not been inside Veyrath house since the wedding, when he had taken a purse from the Duke's steward and signed the paper that made his daughter a duchess.
