Chapter 23: The Last Day
Her father arrived at Ardmoor Hall in a hired gig, with his hat in both hands and a bundle of papers under his arm.
Rosalind met him in the courtyard.
She had meant to say something sensible.
He took one look at her and said, "You are thin in the face."
"I'm well. I'm better than I've been in years."
"Your mother had that color the spring before..."
He stopped.
His mouth worked.
He was fifty-five, and soft, and had lost his hair.
He had signed her away once for twenty thousand crowns because he did not know what else to do.
"Papa," she said. "Come inside. I have to tell you something, and you should sit."
They sat in the small parlour with the fire lit, and she told him.
She told him all of it, plainly, the way she had told families in a corridor.
She told him about the valve, the physician's note, and the girl who had taken the contract to leave him the money.
He did not move while she spoke.
