Chapter 19: Her Satchel
Seo-wan took the sash from her waist and wound it twice around her fist.
It was indigo silk, a hand wide and two arm-lengths long, the only fine thing she owned.
Tae-heon sat on the edge of the bed in his white robe and watched her do it.
"Give me your wrists," she said.
He held them out together, palms up.
"Not like that. Lie back and put them over your head."
He lay back across the bed with his arms stretched above him and his long hair tangled on the pillow.
She knelt at the head of the bed and wrapped the silk around his wrists, once, twice, three times.
She knotted it to the carved post of the bed frame.
She tested the knot with a tug.
Then she slid two fingers under the silk to check that his hands stayed warm.
It was what she would have done for any patient.
"Wiggle your fingers."
He did.
"Good."
"Seo-wan."
"Hm?"
"I couldn't get out of this if I wanted to."
"That's the idea."
She sat back on her heels and looked at him.
He lay there tall and bound and flushed, watching her with a kind of helpless joy.
The sight went through her.
"Now," she said, "I'm going to show you what's in the satchel."
"The satchel."
"The one that follows me everywhere. Do you know what I keep in it?"
"Herbs. Needles. A book."
"And this."
She reached under the bed, drew out the worn leather bag, and took from the inner pocket a brush.
It was a small soft brush of goat hair, the sort used to paint salves on a child's chest.
She held it up in the lamplight.
His eyes widened.
"No."
"Yes."
"You cannot be serious."
"I'm a doctor," she said. "Everything in this bag is for the patient's good."
