Chapter 20: The Night Before
Tae-heon lit every lamp in the room.
There were seven of them, set on the floor in a ring around the bed, and the light moved gold on the paper screens.
Seo-wan stood in the doorway of the side room with her sleeves rolled and her satchel in her hand.
"What is this?"
"I want to see you," he said. "All of you. Properly, for once, with nothing to hide behind."
"We have been naked in the dark for weeks."
"In the dark. I want the light."
He was in his white robe, and he had washed, and combed his hair, and he looked as nervous as a boy at an examination.
She put down the satchel.
"All right," she said. "Sit."
He sat on the edge of the bed.
She crossed to him, slowly, and stood between his knees, and untied her jacket.
He did not reach for her.
He watched her take off the jacket, and the skirt, and the chemise.
She dropped each one at her feet.
Then she stood naked in the ring of lamps, with the light on her breasts and her hips and the soft curve of her belly.
She was twenty-five years old, and it was the first time she had stood in front of anyone and not wanted to cover herself.
"Well?" she said.
He swallowed.
"I don't have a word."
"Try."
"You are the whole of the room."
She put her hands on his shoulders and pushed him back onto the bed.
She climbed over him, and sat on his thighs, and untied his robe, and opened it.
He lay in the light too, pale and lean, with the line of his ribs showing.
The mole under his eye was dark, and the faint red marks she had left on his hip were still there.
"I want to ask you something," he said.
"You said tomorrow."
