Chapter 28: The Repeal

Ilvar didn't argue.

He just smiled, the real one, and kissed my knuckles the way he had in the chapel.

"Spring," he said. "I can count to spring."

"You can't even count your own paces."

"Twelve," he said, and walked back to the miller's loft.

The council met to vote on the Blood Law at the end of the thaw.

Ilvar rode north three days ahead to stand in his seat.

I went on foot.

Not because I had to. Because of who came with me.

The miller and his wife, with their boy strapped on her back.

The smith. The baker and her sons. The widow with the rolling pin.

Every half-elf in Rushford who could walk, and a good many from the farms upriver who'd heard.

Two hundred of us, by the second morning.

Mam and the babies rode in the miller's cart at the front, with the three cradles roped in the back.

We walked up the south road into Starhold, through the city gate and across the white squares.

People came out of their houses to stare.

A half-elf with a midwife's bag, they'd seen. Two hundred, they hadn't.

A star elf girl ran alongside us for a whole street, holding out a loaf of bread to the baker's youngest.

"Are you the wood ones?" she asked him.

He looked at me.

"Yes," I said. "We are."

The round council room had never held so many.

They opened the gallery above it, and we filled it, and then we filled the stairs.
