Chapter 32: The First Born There
I was already pulling on my boots.
"How wrong?" I asked him. "Tell me exactly what you saw."
"His head's out. Most of him isn't. She's been pushing and pushing and he won't come." The boy's voice cracked. "My mother says he's stuck."
Shoulders.
I knew it from that one sentence.
I'd seen it six times. I'd lost one, the year I was fourteen, before Mam taught me what to do with my hands.
"How long since the head?"
"I ran the whole way."
Three miles in the snow. Too long already, and not too late. Not if I ran too.
Mam was on her feet with her bag.
"You're not coming," I said. "Your knees."
"I walked into that wood once in a fire. I can ride into it in the snow." She looked at Ilvar. "Get the miller's cart. And bring the babies. I'm not leaving them with a goat."
Ilvar didn't argue with either of us.
He had the miller up and the cart in the lane before I'd found my horn.
He wrapped the three of them in every fur in the house and laid them in the cart bed on a pile of straw, asleep in a row.
Then he took the lantern off its nail and climbed up beside the miller.
We went down the lane at a gallop, with the boy clinging to the side.
The Heartwood was white with snow, and every branch glowed.
