Chapter 5: Light That Won't Come

I read the letter standing in the hallway, in my borrowed wedding dress.

"Linnet. My name is Ilvar Vael and I'm the crown prince of Starhold. I should have told you on the first day. I was a coward. I'm being made to marry someone I don't love. I won't, if you'll let me come back and ask you something properly. Please write. I."

I read it twice.

"Nobody brought this," I said. "Mam was home every day. Nobody came."

"The receipt was signed L. Merrow."

"I sign Linnet. Always. The whole word."

He went very still.

"Then someone stood at the courier's office and signed your name," he said. "And a week later someone told me the midwife in Rushford had moved away with a man from the coast."

"Who told you?"

"The Chancellor's office."

We looked at each other.

"I'll find out," he said.

"Do that."

I went into my room and shut the door. I didn't sleep. I read the letter three more times and put it under my pillow, which made me furious with myself.

The Academy of Starhold sat across the lake from the palace, at the end of a long white bridge.

It had seven towers and more stairs than any building had a right to.

I was out of breath by the second floor.

My room was at the top of the north tower, because the princess was also a first-year student, and first-years got the top.

I found the door and pushed it open.

Books exploded off the bed.

"Oh no, oh no, sorry, sorry," said a voice, and a girl popped up out of the pile.

She was a star elf, small and freckled, with silver hair chopped short and uneven.

She had ink on her fingers and ink on her nose.

"You're her," she said. "The princess. The half-elf. The triplets. Sorry. I'm Seren. Seren Lisle. I talk a lot when I'm nervous. I'm nervous now. I'll stop."
