Chapter 7: Breech

I ran down the north tower stairs with Ilvar's coat flapping round my knees.

He grabbed my bag off my bed on the way past.

"Don't run," he said. "You'll fall."

"I've run to births with a sprained ankle."

"You weren't carrying three people then."

He was right. I hated that he was right. I slowed down to a fast walk and let him carry the bag.

The lady-in-waiting's rooms were in the palace's east wing.

I heard her before I saw the door.

Four court healers stood around the bed in long white robes, with their hands glowing.

The lady was on her back, gray-faced, soaked in sweat. Her husband sat by the wall with his head in his hands.

Her ladies crowded the corners, crying into their sleeves.

"Out of the way," I said.

The eldest healer turned. He had a beard to his belt and the face of a man who'd never been told no.

"This is no place for you, princess."

"She asked for me. That makes it exactly my place."

"The child has no light," he said. "We've searched. There's nothing there. We must save the mother."

"Did you listen?"

He frowned. "Listen?"

I pushed past him.

The lady grabbed my wrist with a grip.

"They say it's dead," she gasped. "Is it dead?"

"Let me find out."

I pulled the listening horn from my bag and pressed it low on her belly.

Nothing. I moved it. Nothing.

I moved it again, all the way down, almost to her hip.

There.

Faint. Slow. Like someone knocking on a door very far away.

"Your baby's alive," I said. "He's just upside down, the stubborn thing."

The room went silent. Then the husband was on his feet.

"Alive?"

"For now. He's breech. Feet first. He's tired and so is she. Your healers were looking for light. He hasn't got enough of it left to show up. Get me hot water, clean cloths, and somebody hold a lamp."
