Chapter 14: Silk Over Her Eyes
The silk was green, and it was folded in three, and it was tied firmly over Murong Yue's eyes.
Qinglan had knotted it at the back of the Dowager's head, under the black hair, and double-checked that the knot would not slip.
Yue sat on the edge of the phoenix bed in nothing but the silk, her back straight, her hands flat on her thighs.
"Is it too tight?" Qinglan asked.
"No."
"Can you see anything?"
"A little light, at the bottom."
Qinglan stepped in front of her and slid one finger into the knot to make sure of it, then tilted Yue's chin up and kissed her slowly.
"Tonight you tell me things," she said against the red mouth. "Every time I stop, you say a true thing."
"Any true thing?"
"Any. I'll know."
Yue's lips curved. "You are going to regret that."
"I doubt it."
Qinglan lifted a long white goose feather from the lacquer tray she had set on the pillow and drew the tip down the side of Yue's neck.
The Dowager inhaled sharply.
The feather traced the collarbone, the slope of one heavy breast, the tight rosy nipple.
It circled the nipple, light as breath, until the flesh drew up hard and dark.
"Ahh."
"A true thing."
"That," Yue said. "That is. It is very good."
"Not that. Something I don't know."
The feather moved to the other breast and began the same slow circle.
"When I was seventeen," Yue said, hoarse, "I was brought to the palace in a red chair, and I counted the stones on the road, because I did not want to think."
"How many?"
"Three hundred and eleven."
"What else?"
"The old emperor was kind. It was the worst of it. He was kind and he never once asked what I wanted."
Qinglan put the feather down and took the nipple into her mouth instead, and sucked, flicking her tongue.
Yue's back arched off the bed.
"I want to be asked," she said, almost to herself. "I want to be asked, and I want to say."
"Then say."
"Lower. Lie me down."
Qinglan eased her onto her back, onto the red silk, and the long black hair spread across the pillows.
She picked up a second thing from the tray, a square of cool blue satin, and trailed it down the soft belly.
The Dowager's stomach muscles fluttered.
She trailed it between the wide thighs, over the black curls, and lifted it away before it touched anything.
"No," Yue said. "Please."
"A true thing."
"I have been wet since the corridor this morning, when you laughed at something Chunyu said."
"Good girl."
"Do not call me that."
"You want me to?"
A long pause.
"Yes," said the Empress Dowager of Daying, in a very small voice.
"Then, good girl."
Yue shivered from scalp to toe.
Qinglan knelt between her knees and spread them wide with both hands, and looked.
The pink folds were glossy, parted, and the clit stood out swollen and wet at the top.
She bent and blew across it, one soft stream of air.
The Dowager jerked and her fists caught the sheets.
"Qinglan!"
"A true thing."
"You are. You are cruel. You are the cruellest, and I love."
