Chapter 11: The Sergeant's Boots
The sergeant came up the tower stairs on the sixth morning in a laundry boy's apron, with a pair of boots under his arm.
He was fifty years old, square as a gatepost, and his nose had been broken so many times it pointed at his left ear.
The head laundress went ahead of him, talking loudly about starch.
She kept the two guards busy for exactly as long as it took the sergeant to step through the door.
Then she shut it behind him and the bolt slid home.
"Your Grace," said the sergeant.
He drew himself up and saluted, and Ilarion crossed the room in three strides and gripped his forearm.
"You got out."
"I was in the privy when they came, sir. Never in my life been so glad of a bad stomach."
"The others?"
"Forty in the south camp stockade, chained at the ankle. Fed twice a day. No one's hurt."
