Chapter 10: Glass

The old greenhouse stood behind the barn, a leaning box of green-tinged glass.

In the game it stayed locked until Summer.

Here it opened with one shove of her shoulder.

Warm damp air rolled over her face.

Tomato vines climbed the back wall, and a fat bumblebee bumped blindly against the roof.

Caelrin shut the door behind them, and the latch fell, and she turned around.

He had her against the glass before she could say a word.

His mouth came down on hers hard, and his hand flattened beside her head, and the whole pane shook.

She grabbed two fistfuls of his shirt and kissed him back.

They had walked home from the square without speaking, fast, with the Factor's eyes on their backs.

Now every word they hadn't said went into this.

"Aoi," he said, against her lip. "Aoi."

"I'm here."

"He looked at you."

"I know."

"He looked at you the way a man looks at a thing he means to buy."

"Then make me forget it," she said.

He made a sound that was half growl and half groan.

She wore the blue sundress from the Seed Fair, with a laced bodice and a skirt that flared at the knee.

He tugged the laces loose in four hard pulls, and the bodice sagged open to her waist.

She had nothing under it.

His breath caught, and then his mouth was on her breast, hot and wet, sucking the tip into his mouth.

She cried out and arched her back against the cool glass.
