Chapter 13: The Table
Aoi did not remember getting her overalls on.
She was at the gate with the straps hanging off one shoulder and her braids loose.
The shipping bin stood in front of her, full to the lid.
Last night's turnips were in it, and the night before's, and every morning's before that.
The cart was already there.
The driver sat on the bench in his grey coat and his heavy soldier's boots, with the reins slack in one hand.
"Morning, miss," he said. "Flag's up."
"Take it down."
"Miss?"
She put both hands on the lid of the bin and shoved it shut.
"Not today. Not tomorrow. Not any day. Tell your buyer the bin is closed."
The driver looked at the lid, and at her face, and for the first time he looked at her like a person.
"Mr. Venn won't like it."
"I don't care what Mr. Venn likes."
Caelrin stepped out of the farmhouse behind her, buttoning his shirt, with mud still on his boots.
He did not say a word.
He walked to the gate and stood at her shoulder, tall and grey and silent.
The driver looked at him and then at the road.
"I'll tell him," the driver said.
He turned the cart around slowly.
She did not.
The wheels rattled away up the north road, and the tin on the gatepost stayed empty.
Aoi stood and watched until the cart was a speck.
Then her knees stopped working.
Caelrin caught her before she reached the dirt and carried her back inside, and she let him, and she hated that she let him.
He set her on her feet in the kitchen.
She shoved him in the chest.
"Don't be kind to me."
"Aoi."
"I did this. I waved at the cart!"
"You did not know."
