"Caelrin!"

She was out of the door and across the frozen yard in her bare feet, with the quilt trailing in the grass behind her.

He turned.

The sword hung from his hand, pale as ice, and the point of it touched the white top rail of the fence.

He did not look like the man in her memory.

He looked like someone who had just put his hand into a fire and found it did not burn.

"It's still sharp," he said.

"Put it away."

"I wished to know whether I could still hold it."

"Can you?"

"Yes." His voice broke. "Easily. It was the worst thing I have ever learned."

She took the last three steps and wrapped both arms round his waist, sword and all.

He stood there stiff as a post until she felt his arm shake.

The blade slid back into its sheath with a long quiet whisper.

He dropped it in the frosted grass.

Then he pulled her in so hard her feet left the ground.

"I can do it," he said into her neck. "I know how. I am afraid of how easily it comes."

"You won't do it unless you have to."

"And if I have to?"

"Then I'll be next to you," Aoi said. "And you'll remember who you're doing it for."

His shoulders heaved.

She felt cold all down her front where the quilt had slipped, and warm everywhere his body pressed her.
