Chapter 17: The Real Heroine

Benedict and I spent five weeks looking for any way to move the mark that didn't involve telling her.

There wasn't one.

So I told Lena the truth on the nineteenth of December, in a twenty-four-hour diner at four in the morning, between her shift and the first bus.

She ate a stack of pancakes through the entire explanation and said nothing until I got to the part about the book.

"So you're the extra," she said, and put down her fork.

"Supporting character."

"And I'm the main character."

"In the book."

"And I'm supposed to end up with the guy who texts me about his dog."

"His name is Biscuit. He's a golden retriever with an anxiety disorder."

"I know his name. He told me." Lena rubbed her face with both hands. "Cassia. This is insane."

"I know."

"You know it's insane, and you're telling me it's real?"

"I'll prove it."

She waved a hand.

"Okay. Prove it."

I leaned back.

"You named your stethoscope Gary. You were in a high school marching band and you hated the tuba, and you took up nursing after your dad had a heart attack in a Costco parking lot, and you said you'd never again stand around while someone needed help."
