Chapter 19: Birdie
Benedict arrived at the boathouse forty minutes later and stopped dead at the edge of the gravel.
He stood exactly one step short of the invisible line, with his coat open and his hair wind-blown.
For the first time since I'd met him, he looked like a man who had run.
"She went back to the mail drop," he said, before anyone spoke. "Birdie. Alone. She left me a note on my desk that said 'Back by lunch.'"
"She broke in with a hairpin," I said.
"I know. I taught her the lock." His voice cracked. "I taught her. In my first winter, when I didn't know how to say sorry for the man I'd been."
Brant stood in the doorway with his arms folded.
He looked at Benedict for a long moment, at the line on the ground between them, at me.
"You can't cross without an invitation," Brant said.
"I'm aware."
"I'm not doing this for you."
"I'm aware of that, too."
"Birdie once brought my pack a lasagna the size of a car door." Brant's jaw worked. "Come in, Rhinelander."
