Chapter 15: The Boathouse
Sabrina lifted her lamp and swept it over the open cabinet and the ledger in my arms.
"Breaking and entering," she said warmly. "At the Alpha's own archive. Mira, I'm so sorry for you."
Posy had gone gray beside me, and Ilyan stood perfectly still.
"Why are you awake, Sabrina?" he asked. "At two in the morning, with a key to a sealed door?"
"I'm a ward-keeper's daughter, Mr. Greaves. I have a key to everything."
"That isn't what I asked."
"It's what I'm answering." She stepped toward the glass case beside the door, and I saw her palm settle over a brass bell the size of a plum. "Hand over the book, Mira, and I'll say I found it open."
"And if I don't?"
"Then I ring this, and nine wardens find a human charity case holding stolen pack papers." Her smile widened. "Bram will have to arrest you himself. He'll hate it. He'll do it."
I looked at the ledger.
I looked at the line that said the boy will do the rest.
Posy's cold fingers closed around my wrist.
"Don't let go," she breathed.
Sabrina rang the bell.
It was a thin, bright sound, and it ran down the corridor and up the stairs, and somewhere above us a door slammed.
The floor dropped away again.
We came up in the dark of the east stairwell, three of us in a heap, and Posy was crying with laughter and terror both.
"I hate that," she said. "I hate that so much. Again, never."
Far off, through the stone, I heard Sabrina's voice begin to explain to nine wardens why she was alone in a sealed archive at night with an open cabinet.
I hoped she'd enjoy that.
Ilyan took my arm.
"You'll want to show him," he said. "I'll keep Posy."
"Show who?"
