Chapter 26: The Silver Ring
Mira's POV
Sixty wolves took one step, and the sixty-first wolf did not.
He was a broad warden with a bandaged ear, the same one who had shouted "dragon" on the cliffs.
He stood at the edge of the line, looking at Bram's bleeding hand.
"My Alpha," he said. "That's not the oath. He broke it in front of us. You can't take that back with a word."
"Step forward," Lucan said.
"No, sir."
The warden said it plainly, and then he took off his grey jacket and dropped it on the grass.
The wolf beside him looked at the jacket.
Then she dropped hers.
It went down the line.
Jackets fell in the grass, one after another, thirty, forty, until only a dozen were left standing around Lucan, and those dozen looked at the ground.
Bram's five wardens had already crossed the ring to stand at my back.
"You were told," said Lucan, very softly. "I am the Alpha."
"You were," said the old wolf.
He said it without heat.
"I will hear the truth of your hands before I decide what you are."
Lucan smiled.
"You may ask me anything you like, old friend. The Concord's stone has no hold on a man with nothing to hide."
"Then step into it," said Ilyan.
He had been standing off to the side with his split lip and his hands in his pockets.
He took them out now.
"The ring holds only truth. Sabrina stood in it. The accused stood in it. The fae witness may question any who stand there, under the Concord. I would like to question the Alpha."
The crowd stirred.
Lucan looked at the silver ring in the grass.
