Chapter 30: The Alpha's Seat

The Concord met again on the third night, on the burned lawn, because nobody wanted to be indoors.

Someone had carried the dragons' empty chair down from the hill.

It stood at the head of the half circle with its cushion brushed clean, and every time I looked at it I felt a little sick.

"You don't have to sit in it," Ilyan murmured at my shoulder.

"Is that a true thing?"

"It's always a true thing, Mira. I'm fae."

The old wolf stood in front of the three bloodlines and the dragons' seat.

"The pack has no Alpha," he said. "Before the stone can take a new name, it needs the dragons' hand. The last dragon is here. I ask her to give it."

I walked to the middle of the grass.

The old stone stood there too, a squat grey thing about as tall as my hip, which someone had hauled down along with the chair.

For eleven years it had been dark.

I had expected it to be heavy.

When I put my palm on it, it was warm, and it hummed.

I felt the whole valley through it.

I felt four hundred pulses on the lawn, and under them something older, slow and patient, like a very large animal asleep.

It wanted to be asked.

Lucan had wanted to rule through it.

I thought about that, standing there, with the stone's long warmth going up my arm.

One pack, one law, one hand on the key.

I could have it.

All of them were looking at me, and they knew I could.

"I won't," I said.

The old wolf frowned.

"Won't what, child?"

"Be the key." I turned so they could all hear. "The dragons held it because nobody else was trusted with it. That's why a man killed my family to take it."
