Chapter 4: One True Thing

"One true thing," I said. "That's the whole price?"

"One true thing nobody else knows," said Ilyan. "I can't lie, so I can't cheat you either. Fair?"

I looked at him for a long moment.

He had no reason to be kind to me, and he'd already been honest enough to scare me.

That was the part I trusted.

"I've never been cold," I said.

Ilyan didn't move.

"Not once," I said. "I don't own a coat. In January I slept with the window open at the group home and the matron called it good circulation. When I was seven I put my hand on the stove to see what would happen and it felt like a warm cup."

"Did it burn you?"

"No. I didn't tell anyone."

His eyes had gone very bright, and he sat forward.

"Thank you," he said quietly. "That's worth the price."

"Then pay it."

He leaned across the carrel and lowered his voice.

"The marks on your neck are a dragon's. They burn gold when the blood wakes. There haven't been dragons at Eclipse for eleven years, because there haven't been any dragons anywhere."

"What happened to them?"

"Burned out. A whole bloodline in one night." He swallowed. "Everyone was told it was a clan feud that got out of hand. Whoever did it did a thorough job."
