Chapter 7: Wolf Trials
I walked back up the slope in the rain with my hands shaking and my face stinging.
He did not follow me.
That was the first time in four days he had not been exactly ten paces away.
In the morning the whole campus was out on the lower lawn, because it was Trial Day.
Posy explained it over a roll she wasn't eating.
"Once a term the wolves hold open trials. Any student can challenge any student to a bout, first blood wins, and the wardens referee. Most people only do it to show off."
"Does anyone ever get hurt?"
"Sometimes. First blood is a rule. It isn't a promise."
I should have heard that and gone to hide in the library.
Instead I sat on the bleachers with a coffee, because I was tired of hiding.
Bram stood at the edge of the ring with the other wardens, ten paces from me exactly, and did not look my way once.
I told myself I didn't care.
A bell rang.
Sabrina came across the grass in a fitted training jacket, her auburn hair in a tight braid and her pack ribbon around her wrist.
She stopped at the ring and smiled at me with her whole face.
"I challenge Mira Quennell," she said.
The bleachers went silent.
"Me?" I said.
"You boiled a cup of water in front of thirty students," Sabrina said gently. "People are talking. The dean won't say what happened, so I'd like to show everyone there's nothing to be afraid of. It's only a friendly bout. First blood."
I looked at Bram.
