"No," said Emrys behind me, rough as gravel. "I hadn't got that far."
"He leaves out so much," said the Regent, "for a man who says everything."
She did not hurry.
"I stood in the hollow the night my sister carried him in, Witness, and I smelled the tobacco on his blanket."
"I told Maeve the Hills would never forgive her. She never listened. It was her great charm."
"You've known he's human for twenty-six years," I said.
"And I have kept it for him, like a good aunt."
"Why?"
"Because a secret is only worth something on the day it can be spent."
She turned her black eyes on me.
"I asked my question under the Oak because I knew what he would answer."
"I knew you would hear it."
"I am so very grateful to you, Nia Pritchard."
My skin went cold from the neck down.
"At Midwinter you will stand before the court and certify that the King has spoken no falsehood this year."
"Certify the truth, and I shall tell the Hills what the Oak did not."
"They will not keep a man for a king, and my son will wear the crown."
