Chapter 20: Praise
"That side," I said, into the dark. "Nobody's ever slept on it."
"No."
"Twenty-six years."
"I've never wanted anyone to." His hand moved on my back. "That isn't true. I never let myself want it."
I turned onto my elbow and looked at him in the low fire.
"Lie to me," I said.
"What?"
"Once. Something harmless. Tell me my hair looks terrible."
"Your hair is the best thing I've seen in any hall."
"That's the opposite of what I asked."
"I know."
"It's a game, Emrys. It's a joke. Nobody will hear it."
"I'll hear it," he said.
He was quiet for a moment.
"People think a lie is hard. It's the easiest thing in the world. It's there every hour, asking."
"If I do it once for fun, I won't know afterwards which hour it was for."
"I did it once for you, and it cost more than I've told you."
"I won't do it to you in this bed."
I laid my head on his chest.
I had asked, I think, to find out whether I was safe, and I had found out.
"Then I'll do the other thing," I said. "I'll tell you something true."
