Chapter 23: The Reckoning
The Reckoning is held under the Oak, with the whole court in tiers of stone and the lanterns turned to white.
I wore my yellow raincoat, and I carried my notebook, and I had a letter in my pocket.
Emrys stood before the tree in his grey coat, bare-headed.
He did not look at me, and I understood it was so that he wouldn't break.
Morwenna Marrow came into the circle in plum silk, with Casimir at her heel and a rolled sheet of paper in his hand.
"Witness," she said. "The year is turned, and the Treaty asks one thing of you."
"Say before the Hills whether the King has spoken any falsehood."
"In a moment, my lady."
"Before you answer," she said smoothly, "the court should hear the whole of the carving you have been so busy reading, lest you be misled."
Casimir held up the second sheet.
"'And let the Oak shed its leaves,'" read the Regent, in her warm milk voice, "'for a lie spoken under it.'"
The hall drew in its breath.
"That is the law of the tree," said Morwenna. "A lie in its hearing, and it sheds."
