Chapter 14: Ten Paces
Wynne dropped to one knee.
Her right hand was still flat on the oak, and the ink under it smeared.
The thread yanked at her left wrist, away from the hall, toward wherever they were taking him.
It felt like a hot wire pulled through the bone.
"Mistress Aldercott seems unwell," the Chancellor said, to nobody, and smiled.
Four hundred guests watched her breathe through her teeth.
On the right, Lorcan had stopped writing.
He turned his head and looked at her with something close to pity.
"Wynne," he said, softly. "You can still stop. Say you were mistaken, and I'll speak for you."
She did not answer.
The pain climbed her arm and settled behind her eyes.
Somewhere under the floor, a long way off, a man was walking away from her.
She could feel every step in the thread.
The first ten paces had been a warning.
At twenty, black spots opened in the air.
Blood ran from her nose and dropped on the stone.
*Don't look at the sand.*
She had written margins with a fever once, and with a broken finger once.
