Chapter 22: On His Knees
He was on the lowest of the palace steps, on his knees in the snow.
The grey coat hung off him.
His hair was wet, and his lips were blue, and when he saw her coming down the stair he tried to stand and could not.
So he stayed where he was.
Tavish stopped at the bottom of the flight and leaned against the sleigh with his arms folded.
He was thirty paces off, and the thread lay slack and golden across the snow between them, and it did not sting.
"You don't have to," Tavish had said, in the corridor.
"I know."
"I'll stand where you can see me."
"I know," she said. "Stand there."
Now she came down the last step and stopped at arm's length from Lorcan Aventine.
"Wynne," he said.
His voice cracked on it.
He looked up at her with his big blue eyes, red-rimmed and wet.
For a moment he was the man who had carried a lamp up the tower stairs when she was too tired to see.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I have never been so sorry."
