Chapter 9: White

Rhys opened the bathroom door and stopped dead.

I stood in the little room on four white paws, with my head almost touching the ceiling.

I'd never been so tall.

I could smell everything, the bleach in the drain and the pine smoke on his coat.

I could smell him, cedar and iron and a dark wild note under it.

"Don't move," he said, very softly.

He closed the door behind him and turned the lock.

"There are sixty wolves on the other side of that wall, and not one of them has seen a white wolf in their life. You can't go out that way."

I whined.

"I know. I know. Let me think."

He opened the narrow window over the sink, then looked at me and looked at the window.

"It won't fit you."

I put my head down and pushed.

The wall shuddered, the plaster cracked, and the whole window frame came out in my teeth.

Rhys stared.

"Or you could do that," he said.

We went out into the woods behind the hall, me through the hole and him over the sill.

I ran.

I had never run like that in my life.

Six years of ache fell off my legs, and the ground went by in a rush of cold leaves and wet earth, and he ran beside me in the shape of a big grey wolf with a limp.

We ran until the hall was gone and the sky was open overhead.

I stopped in a hollow under a wide old fir, and my body folded back into itself.

It was shorter than I expected, and it hurt less.

I knelt on the moss, naked and human and breathing hard.

He shifted a moment later and stood over me, tall and bare.
