Chapter 15: Borrowed Hours
Zhuang Bo came up the four flights at first light with the lamp in both arms and his face wet.
"I was late," he said at the door. "I'm sorry, Brother Ye, he's so dim."
Ye Ming took the lamp and set it on the desk.
The crack ran from rim to base now, and a second one crossed it.
The candle had gone out.
He lit it with a match, and it burned small, and no shape came up out of the damp on the wall.
"Gu Chen," he said.
Nothing answered.
"You're not allowed to do this. I haven't given you leave."
Zhuang Bo covered his mouth with his sleeve.
"Sleep on my bed," Ye Ming told him. "Lock the door. Stay away from the Hall."
"Master Lu will know it was me."
"He'll know it was me, and I'll tell him so. Go."
When Zhuang Bo had gone, Ye Ming went down the stairs and into the dried-squid shop.
Strings of squid hung in the doorway, and three neighbors sat on stools drinking tea.
The owner's wife looked him over.
"Ah-Ming," she said. "Jiah-pa buay? You look dreadful. Sit."
He sat.
He looked tired and not at all ready for work, and the other two neighbors went quiet.
"Your mother's gold ring," he said gently. "You've been afraid you lost it."
"You haven't. It's in the second rice jar, under the lid."
Her hand flew to her throat.
"Who told you? I told nobody, not even my husband."
"Nobody had to. She put it there herself."
He said it in the low reading voice he used on widows.
He said it with complete conviction, and watched all three faces change.
