Chapter 13: The Driver's Seat

Dillon didn't run down the gravel after it.

He cut across the dark lawn instead, straight for the end of the driveway where the hedge met the mailbox.

He knew the car had to slow there to turn.

He got there first and swung around with both arms out wide.

"Amelie, stop!"

The SUV came down the drive with its high beams on.

Amelie had the phone pressed to the windshield, and she was watching the screen.

She wasn't watching the road.

Griffin said something sharp and reached for the wheel, half a second late.

"Dillon, move!" I screamed.

The brakes squealed far too late.

There was a sound I will hear for the rest of my life.

My brother went up over the hood and came down on the gravel by the mailbox.

The SUV rolled ten more feet into the street and stopped with one wheel on the curb.

Nobody in it moved.

I was already running.

"Em, talk to me," Bo said in my ear. "Em!"

"She hit Dillon. I need my hands. I'm hanging up."

"Call them. Go."

I hung up on him and dialed 911 with my thumb as I dropped to my knees beside my brother.

The clock on my screen said 9:41.

I looked at it for a moment, because of the note.

The night she drove drunk and killed someone, it said. Mom and Dad put me in the driver's seat.
