Chapter 14: Point Zero Zero

"That's a lie," I said.

The officer held up a hand. "Ma'am, you smell like alcohol."

"My mother poured it on me just now. The bottle's on the gravel."

The wine bottle lay on its side by the mailbox, next to the dark patch where Dillon had been.

"It's on the 911 call," I said. "I said it out loud while she was doing it. Get the recording."

Dad stepped in with his hand already out, easy and warm, the voice he used on first-time buyers.

"Officer, I'm so sorry about this. My daughter's been through a lot. She's not well. She's had problems."

He sounded so sad about it.

If I hadn't known him, I'd have felt sorry for him too.

"I want a breath test," I said.

The officer blinked.

"Right now. Here. And a blood draw at the hospital. I want it in a tube with my name on it."

"Most people in your spot ask for a lawyer."

"Most people in my spot were drinking."

Behind me the ambulance doors slammed. The siren started and faded down the street with my brother in it.

The officer went to his car and came back with a little gray box and a plastic straw.

"Deep breath. Blow until I tell you to stop."

I blew until my vision went spotty.

He turned the screen to look at it.

Then he turned it so I could see.
