"Do the curtains have flowers on them?" I asked.
Bo groaned into the pillow. "Yellow ones."
"Then yes."
He lifted his head. "Yes?"
"Yes, Bo. All summer. In the apartment that smells like minnows."
He kissed me so hard I laughed into his mouth.
I moved into the room over the bait shop on the first of June.
It took one trip.
A duffel, a box of lab notebooks, the leather deck gloves, and Grandma's frame wrapped in a towel.
Bo's mother had hung the yellow curtains and laid a quilt on the bed.
On the windowsill sat a jar of cherry jam with a note.
Welcome home. Rent is Sunday dinner.
The window looked straight down on the fuel pump and out over the whole gray lake.
That first night I slid the taped portrait into the frame.
It fit exactly.
The cook took one look and carried it down to the Grace without asking.
She hung it on the galley wall over the coffee maker, where she could see it from the stove.
"The boat needs a grandma," she said. "Don't argue with me."
The Grace's first summer run left on a Saturday in the middle of June.
Six in the morning, flat water, the sky going from pink to white.
