Chapter 23: Signed

The hearing room had a long table, a pitcher of water, and a dean who did not smile.

Elliot walked in at nine sharp with a legal pad that now held three pages in his own plain handwriting.

The clinic director sat to the dean's left, with her reading glasses on their chain.

The athletic director sat at the far end.

Tanner sat in the back row, because the dean had said that was the rule.

"Mr. Erickson," the dean said. "Coach Kestner's complaint says you were inappropriate with a player."

"That's true," Elliot said.

Nobody in the room moved.

"I started a relationship with a patient while I was his therapist," Elliot said. "I knew the rule, and I broke it."

"I told the athletic director first, before anyone could use it against me."

"I'm not going to say it was wrong to care about him."

"I'm going to say I should have asked for a different patient before I let myself."

He set the pad on the table.

"Here is the rest. He has never gone beyond my instructions."

"His shoulder improved because he did every rep I gave him, even at three in the morning."
