Chapter 10: The Hot Spring

The hot spring lay at the top of the upper pasture, in a hollow of aspen and spruce.

August Rasmussen had walled the pool with river rock sixty years ago.

Steam rose from it in the cold evening.

I stood on the flat stone at its edge with a towel around me, and the three of them stood behind me.

I thought: I am not signing.

It came to me whole.

I was looking at the water, at the pale smoke on the dark trees, at the ridge going gold.

The thought arrived.

"I'm happy," I said, and it was true.

I dropped the towel.

The water was hot and mineral-smelling, and I sank into it to my chin with a long groan.

The stones were warm under my feet.

One by one they came in behind me, Dutch with a great sigh, Nels with a hiss, Emmett last.

They sat along the rock shelf with the water at their chests.

The sky turned purple.

The first star came out above the ridge.

"Come here," Nels said.

I waded to him.

He took me by the hips and pulled me onto his lap.

I straddled his thighs in the hot water with my arms on his shoulders.
