Chapter 14: Second Opening

"OR two," I said into the wall phone. "Now. I'm opening his chest."

The night supervisor didn't answer right away.

"Doc," she said. "I can't give you a room."

"Then I'll do it in the hall."

"There's an order. From the Council. It came down at eight o'clock tonight."

I heard boots in the corridor behind me.

I hung up and turned around.

Boyd Gaskell was coming toward the CT suite in his sheepskin jacket, with a folded paper in one hand and two enforcers behind him.

"Doc," he said. "I hate this. I truly do."

"Dr. Geneva Coulter is barred from treating the Alpha until this Council has judged her claim on him. Signed by the eldest."

"Then I don't know what to tell you."

He hung up.

Lucille came up beside me with her broken glasses taped together at the bridge.

"Well," she said. "Guess it's us."

Boyd's smile thinned.

"Lucille. You were in handcuffs an hour ago."

"And you were in my way an hour ago. Things change."

Behind the glass, Stellan turned his head on the table.

He lifted one hand and crooked two fingers at me.

I went in.

"Boyd," he said. It was barely sound.

"He's got an order from the eldest. I'm not allowed to touch you."

"You're touching me."

I looked down.

My hand was flat on his chest.

I hadn't noticed putting it there.

"Is it bad?"

"It's moving. If it goes in, I can't fix it."

"Then do it now."

"The Council..."
