Chapter 13: Morning After
The wolf did not lift its head off my feet for a long time.
Nobody in the hall moved.
I kept my palm between its ears and felt the great ribs rise and fall under my hand.
"Everyone out," Ingrid said, in a voice I had never heard her use. "Now."
The elders left first, with the new iron dragged between them, and they did not look at me.
The humans went next, white-faced, and the wolves last, each one dipping its head as it passed.
In five minutes the hall held only the hearth, Ingrid in the kitchen doorway.
A black wolf the size of a horse.
I sat back on my heels, and the heavy head slid up into my lap.
Then it happened backward.
The fur ran out of him.
The bones slid and settled.
A naked man lay on the boards with his face against my stomach.
He was shaking so hard that my teeth ached.
Ingrid threw a wool blanket over his back and put her hand on my shoulder for one second.
"Nest room," she said. "The moon has him till sunrise. Don't let him out of your sight."
She went away and shut the kitchen door behind her.
Eero lifted his face.
His cheeks were wet, and his eyes were gold from rim to rim.
"It reached me," he said. "It came through the wolf like a hand through deep water."
"I know."
"The wolf wanted him on the floor, Anja. Part of me wanted it too, and I am ashamed of how much."
"I know. Come upstairs."
He got up with the blanket round his hips.
He did not let go of my hand once on the stairs.
The nest room was warm.
The skylight over the round bed showed a sky full of stars and one white eye.
