Chapter 21: Daylight
"It's daylight," I said.
I was lying on my side in my own bed on Saturday morning.
The blind was up, and a flat white winter sun poured across the quilt.
Eero lay behind me with one arm under my head.
He had not said a word since I'd woken him with my mouth on the back of his hand.
"I know," he said into my hair.
"I said I'd ask."
"You did."
"I'm not asking yet. First I'm going to do something. And then I'm going to say it."
His breath caught against my neck.
"All right," he said.
I reached into the drawer of the nightstand, and found it, and put it into his big scarred palm.
It was purple, and it was small in his hand, and it had a charger cord I had forgotten about.
He turned it over, slowly.
"Anja."
"You hold it. I tell you where."
"Yes."
"Press the top."
He pressed it, and it hummed against his palm, a bee in a jar.
I felt him go hard against the back of my thighs, through the sheet, all at once.
I pushed the sheet down.
"Between my legs," I said.
His arm slid down my belly and under the quilt.
The toy found me, a low steady buzz against my clit.
I gasped.
"Like that?"
"Lighter."
He lightened.
"There."
I closed my eyes, and my hips began to move.
"Now talk," I said. "Tell me the story."
"Which?"
"The one you've never told me. All of it. Slowly."
His mouth came to my ear.
"There's a night," he said, "and it's an ordinary night, a Tuesday, and you're home from work with your headset marks on your ears."
