Chapter 24: The Yes
We went up the cellar stairs into a kitchen full of winter light.
Ingrid had left a pot of coffee on the stove and a plate of cardamom buns under a cloth, and no note at all.
Outside the window, the lake lay flat and white to the horizon.
The sun was already high over the pines.
The moon was a pale smudge going down on the far side of the sky.
It was a day with no moon in it.
I put my coat on over my dress, and Eero put on his boots and his canvas coat.
He did not ask where we were going.
We walked down the shore road together, past the empty lodge porch and the little hand-painted moon.
Then we went out along the dock to the boathouse.
The planks rang under our boots.
At the end of the dock, where he had stood with a chain over his head, I stopped.
Snow squeaked beneath my feet.
The water below was black and skinned with thin ice, and a gull sat on a piling, watching us.
I took his hands in mine.
They were big and cold and scarred, and they were shaking a little.
"It's daylight," I said.
"I know."
"It isn't a moon."
"No."
"I said I'd ask you."
"You did."
I looked up at him, at the shaved head and the black beard.
