Chapter 13: My Name in the Chamber

The Royal Council sat in the long chamber with the lamps still lit, and every head turned when I walked in beside the King.

I had not slept, and I had not washed.

The councilor in charge of appointments was on his feet at the head of the table.

He was the first to breathe in, and his face changed.

"She smells of him," he said to the room. "Of the King. All over."

Someone coughed.

Alaric took a step toward the table, and I put two fingers on his sleeve.

"Let him say it," I said quietly.

Then I walked to the middle of the floor, alone, and the councilor kept talking.

"A night guard saw a white wolf at the old bridge. Tonight the King's mate arrives from the King's bed, and nobody in this castle has ever seen her wolf."

"You've hidden a claimant, Majesty. You've kept her in the east tower while the law stands against her."

"Which law?" I said.

He stopped.

"I have a question first," I said. "Is it a crime to be seen at a bridge?"

"It is a crime to be what was seen there."

"Then I'll save the night guard his trouble."

I looked at the faces around the long table.

Thirty councilors, two inspectors, and the old men of the lineage hall who kept the books of every pack's blood.

None of them had looked at me in thirteen years, and now none of them looked away.
