Chapter 9: Tuesday

Four hundred faces turned to me.

I could feel them.

Lucian's hand was still on my back.

"Oh my God," the woman in pearls said.

Jake pushed forward from the bar.

He'd found his grin again.

"I tried to warn everybody," he said, loud enough for the back of the room. "She's been obsessed with Bianca for months. She set up a fake company to bleed Bianca's family. That's who she is."

A man near me stepped away, the way the man in the hotel hallway had.

Bianca pressed her fingers under her eyes.

"I'm so sorry, Lucian," she said. "I just couldn't let you be fooled."

Gordon Slattery climbed the steps to stand beside his daughter and put an arm around her.

"Security," he called. "Somebody get that woman out of here."

Nobody moved.

They were all looking at Lucian.

He hadn't let go of me.

He took his hand off my back only to slide it down and lace his fingers through mine.

Then he looked up at the screen, at my name twenty feet tall.

"I know," he said.

He said it in the same flat, calm voice he'd used in the lobby.

The ballroom was so quiet I heard the ice shift in a bucket.

"Ms. Quinn came to me Monday night with that exact filing," he said. "She told me her name had been forged onto it. She gave a sworn statement to my lawyers on Tuesday."
